Araraiti Coastal Retreat
Northland
Perched around the conical hill of this heavenly coastal headland, this project comprises a series of smaller pods within the landscape, taking its cues from the breaking rock formations of the headland below. The breaking down of mass of a singular dwelling to smaller pods accentuate a dynamic experience as one traverses around and through the spaces. The spaces in-between framing views, drawing ones gaze out to the sublime views, and drawing the landscape in.
The smaller scale of the dwelling receding, and sitting harmoniously in the landscape.
Each pod echoes the materiality of the landscape, seemingly solid in nature, offering a nurturing retreat from the exposed environment. The roof of the living pod sitting lightly on its solid base as a shelter under which to inhabit, reminiscent of the memories of camping on the site.
A variety of outdoor spaces offer protection from the elements in all-weather conditions whilst supporting the rituals of holiday making.
Each pod is positioned to celebrate unique views, with the ultimate view along the coastline, and beyond to the headland reserved for the shared spaces for living, dining and cooking for all to enjoy together.
